Teacher Mentor Course

The Mentor Teacher Course is a dynamic, practice-oriented programme designed to empower classroom teachers to become expert mentors for student teachers during their Teaching Practice placements in schools.

This course is the result of a collaborative partnership between the Cape Teaching and Learning Institute (CTLI) and the four public universities in the Western Cape. It plays a vital role in strengthening the bridge between teacher education and real-world classroom experience by equipping mentors with the tools, strategies, and confidence to guide and support student teachers during one of the most critical phases of their professional journey—Teaching Practice.

Structured as a blended learning programme, the course spans ten weeks, combining six engaging online units with in-person contact sessions held at the CTLI. This format allows for flexibility, professional interaction, and deeper reflection on mentorship practices.

The course is offered in two cycles annually, aligned with the university semesters. Teachers from both primary and high schools, across urban and rural contexts, and from all eight education districts in the Western Cape are encouraged to participate.

Whether you're a seasoned educator or looking to deepen your impact on the profession, the Mentor Teacher Course offers a rewarding opportunity to shape the future of teaching—one student teacher at a time.
