About this Course

Mode: This 30-hour course will be delivered in English.

Background: The WCED Positive Behaviour Programme is a multi-pronged strategy to promote positive and restorative behaviour approaches by creating caring school cultures through educator capacity building, learner and parent intervention programmes as well as awareness programmes to highlight the programme efforts.

The new approach to positive behavioural support represents a shift from a focus on deficit and control, towards a developmental and restorative approach. This will enable learners to progress towards responsibility, relationship building and a greater sense of well-being. This approach is also embodied in the South African Constitution, the South African Schools Act and the specific outcomes of the National Curriculum Statement which give priority to the concept of responsibility.

This course has been designed to provide you with the necessary knowledge, skills and practical strategies to meet the differing and often challenging behavioural situations you find in your classroom.

Main lesson topics:

  1. Foundations for Positive Behaviour
  2. Trauma-informed Schools
  3. Transformative Interventions
  4. Violence Prevention in Schools
  5. Restorative Discipline

Additional to these Lessons is a:

  • Positive Behaviour Seminar - 1 day (Term 2 course participants attend a workshop on a Saturday at the CTLI) - 30 May 2026

The professional development programme is self-paced and will be presented through an online Learner Management System (Moodle).  There will be three MS Teams 1-hour webinars which will cover the following topics:

  1. 9 April 2026 - Course launch - Basic navigation of the course
  2. 14 April 2026 - Understanding the impact of trauma on behaviour (Please apply for this seperately)
  3. 28 April 2026 - Managing anger in the classroom (Please apply for this seperately)

Topics 2 and 3 will be presented by Mr Neville Goliath from the WCED Positive Behaviour Programme.

Although this course is self-paced, a guide will be provided to assist you with time management and planning.  The course duration is approximately 30 hours (including webinars).  Please note that Moodle monitors participant engagement with the course and an average time to complete the course has been calculated.

The content of the programme will be facilitated through slideshow presentations, literature readings, tasks and quizzes.  A facilitator will be available at prescribed times to assist you with any queries or help you navigate the course.

To successfully complete the course you will need to complete a course evaluation as well as short quizzes.
