About this Course

This is a 5-day face-to-face course delivered at the CTLI.

The Bridging Math Barriers course is designed to equip Grade 3 and 4 teachers with the knowledge and strategies to support learners in mastering foundational mathematical competencies. This course explores the critical role of perceptual skills in mathematical development and examines how delays in these skills impact the acquisition of the five core mathematical skills:

  1. Number Sense – Understanding numbers, their relationships, and basic operations.
  2. Operational Fluency – Developing proficiency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  3. Spatial Awareness – Recognizing and manipulating shapes and patterns.
  4. Measurement Concepts – Understanding length, weight, time, and volume.
  5. Problem-Solving Abilities – Applying mathematical reasoning to real-life situations.

Through interactive sessions, practical strategies, and hands-on activities, teachers will learn how to identify and address perceptual skill delays that hinder mathematical progress. The course provides a structured approach to scaffolding learning, ensuring that all learners, including those facing learning barriers, can develop confidence and competence in mathematics.

Note that as this is a 5-day face-to-face course, you will need to source a substitute to be in your class. The CTLI will pay the substitute. If you are having trouble sourcing a subsitute, please let us know. The substitute needs to have a teaching qualification and needs to be 65 or younger.
